Fermat Expands in Asia with New Hires

Fermat Capital Management, a specialist catastrophe bond and insurance-linked securities (ILS) investment manager, has hired Nicolas Tan in Singapore as part of its expansion in the Asia Pacific region. The company has also set up a Japanese office, marking a significant step in building its presence in the region.

Tan joins Fermat from Aberdeen, where he worked in business development for over two years. Prior to that, he held roles at GAM Investments, Capital Group, and Niko Asset Management, all focused on business development and investor relations.

The addition of Tan and the launch of the Japanese office are the latest moves in Fermat’s expansion in the Asia Pacific region. The company aims to enhance its connectivity with institutional investors in the region. Tan will work closely with Greg Hickling, another Director of Investor Relations, APAC, who is based in Australia.

Tan and Hickling will service Fermat’s investor clients across the APAC region. They established an office in Japan at the beginning of this year, with Takakiyo Iwamoto as Director of Investor Relations for Japan and Co-Representative Director of Fermat Capital (Japan) K.K.

Iwamoto joined the company in January 2026, bringing experience from senior positions at Barclays, State Street Global Advisors, J.P. Morgan, Deutsche Bank, and BNP Paribas. Sachie Kobayashi was also hired as a Senior Investor Relations Associate for Japan, strengthening the company’s expertise in the country.

The Japan office was set up to provide a dedicated base for marketing Fermat ILS fund strategies to Japanese investors and servicing investor clients. This office is part of Fermat’s efforts to expand its presence in the Asia Pacific region, which also includes the recent launch of a dedicated cat bond fund strategy for investors in New Zealand.

These moves demonstrate the importance of the Asia Pacific region and investor base to Fermat, as well as the company’s ambitions in the fast-moving markets there. As of July 2026, Fermat Capital Management has surpassed $11 billion of ILS assets under management.

Fermat’s commitment to the region is evident in its efforts to build a strong presence and provide dedicated services to its investor clients. The company’s growth in the Asia Pacific region is a significant development in the ILS market.
